Upgrades to items are a method to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it can boost the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level and increase other stats.

Item Stats

Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player increases the likelihood of locating items and the properties that are created by loot and the intensity of these properties. It doesn't, however, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player the chance to upgrade gear earlier in the game. This is more advantageous for early game runs, because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.
Luck can also boost the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade probability that increases with each item level and can be further increased through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
Weapons, armor, and shields can be made or spawn by using the Luck property, with a default value of 40. These items can then be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to grant an additional +40 Luck, or to increase the existing Luck of the item up to 140.
Certain items, like the Hollow-infused weapon, can also be equipped to increase the damage of any ability that deals damage by 5%. These items are available in the shop, or they can be crafted using the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Upgrades to items can be costly and not all upgrades will succeed. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chance of success of an upgrade or to prevent players from losing their item in the event that it is not successful.
The success rate of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of completing the upgrade successfully and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The chance of success can only be increased so much, and the chance that an upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%.

The upgrade overlays of the item are rendered above the items in the inventory. This could cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects.
